Dolly's first interview for the Showcase Artist on CMT aired Nov. 6 with narrator Patty Loveless. It featured some great photographs and video compilations of Dolly as well as music video clips from "Honky Tonk Songs," "More Where That Came From," "Love is Strange" (with Kenny Rodgers), "To Know Him is To Love Him" (with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris), "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" (with Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette), "Potential New Boyfriend" and "Why'd Ya Come In Here Lookin' Like That." It also included interviews with Loveless, Porter Wagoner and Rodgers.
Some highlights of Dolly's interview included the following:
* Her severe depression in the mid-1980s, which included suicide contemplation but left her with renewed spirituality and a deeper understanding and empathy for those in pain.
* Her autobiography, which she for the first time admitted she actually had some regrets in writing. She said she had never wanted to write a book but had been pressured for so long she finally gave in and did it for the money, and it did sell well. However, she said she was proud of it but would have rather waited until she was older to write more of the full story, since she tried to protect a lot of people. She added that once all those she had tried to protect are dead, she hopes to write the whole story.
* She considered posing for the Hungry Again cover without make-up or a wig but decided against it. Also, she said many older photos of her, including some album covers, show her real hair, not wigs.
* She discussed her wig business venture with Revlon, saying it was very successful. On its suggestion that it can allow a woman to be someone different each day by using wigs, she joked about her plastic surgery and how her husband said she never has to worry about him cheating on her because he gets a new woman every three or four months.
* She discussed the rigors of touring, especially before the fame, when she often had to freshen up in a service station restroom before a show, and how great it was to have the privacy offered by a tour bus.
* She discussed some of her great musical partnerships, such as Porter Wagoner and Kenny Rogers, noting her special appreciation for the Trio compilation with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt (saying someone told her it sold 3 million copies; anyone heard that? I thought it was just 1 million; she also mentioned the upcoming Trio II) and the Honky Tonk Angels project with Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette, noting the great loss to the country music world when Wynette passed away earlier this year.
* She also talked about her history with television, noting the first time she saw it was as a child, when the whole family drove up to Knoxsville to her Aunt Estelle's house to watch a television movie on the life of their family doctor/missionary, Dr. Robert F. Thomas. (She added she hopes to someday produce her own movie about Dr. Thomas, who was paid a sack of cornmeal for delivering baby Dolly.) She also recalled as a teenager sneaking around with her friends to see Elvis on television. Finally, she talked about music videos, including her first, "Potential New Boyfriend," which she said was awful, and her favorite, "Why'd Ya Come in Here Lookin' Like That."
