Feb. 17: Country Music Magazine's Hazel Smith advocates Dolly being
inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame in the magazine's January/February
issue. In the "People" section, Smith writes that with the millennium
approaching, it is time to honor the legendary Webb Pierce with induction. She
goes on to say it's also time to elect Carl Smith, Faron Young, Dolly, and
Waylon Jennings to the Hall of Fame as well. She notes at the end that it
wouldn't surprise her if Dolly and Waylon, who "have track records as
songwriters and singers that deserve immediate attention," won't end up in the
Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame as well. "Why can't we do it now?" she asks.
* Also in the column, Smith relates the death of 96-year-old Cas Walker,
Dolly's early mentor. The legend of east Tennessee was a politician, grocery
store chain founder and local television celebrity. Dolly got her start at the
age of 10 singing on his television program. Upon his death, the mayor of his
hometown of Knoxville ordered all flags flown at half-mast. Dolly said of him,
"Today is a sad day for me, but I'm sure God is glad to have him."
