In Memoriam: Curly Putnam Legendary country songwriter Curly Putnam, who penned Dolly's first country chart single, 1967's "Dumb Blonde," has died at age 85. Dolly recorded at least three other Putnam tracks early in her career: a cover of "D.I.V.O.R.C.E.," "A Little Bit Slow To Catch On" and "Slip Away Today." Oct. 29: Dollywood Hosts 'Colors' Premiere Dollywood on Friday revealed that the park, which is normally closed on Tuesdays in November, will open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, for a red carpet premiere of her Nov. 30 NBC movie Dolly Parton's Christmas Of Many Colors: Circle Of Love. The park promises red carpet arrivals of Dolly and the film's cast, media interviews and more, ending with the park's new Parade of Many Colors. Knoxville television station WBIR reports here that the red carpet will be separated from the park's public guests but there will be an area where guests will be able to see it. Likewise, the actual premiere of the film will be closed to the public, only open to VIPs, according to the story.
CMA 50th Anniversary Coverage Continues The anticipation is building for Wednesday night's CMA Awards on ABC, where Dolly will receive the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. The CMAs have released a new ad for the evening which promises a "show-stopping tribute to Dolly Parton," which reports indicate will prominently feature Jennifer Nettles, who plays Dolly's mother in her NBC movies. Pirates Voyage Holiday Date Revealed In recent days, dates for the Christmas shows at her Branson and Pigeon Forge dinner theaters were announced, and now the date for the holiday show at her Pirates Voyage dinner theater in Myrtle Beach, S.C., has been released: Nov. 10.
Oct. 27: Dollywood Adding Three Rides For 2017 Dollywood on Wednesday announced two additions for its 2017 season: a 20-story free-fall tower over Timber Canyon called Drop Line (which from the description sounds like it is where Timber Tower once stood) and a junior coaster called Whistle Punk Chaser, both opening next summer. These are in addition to the previously-announced Splash Country ride TailSpin Racer. Also revealed were Tokyo-based dance company enra and an October evening GREAT Pumpkin LumiNights event during Harvest Festival. "As everybody already knows, family is very important to me," Dolly Parton said in a press release. "These days, there doesn't seem to be enough time for families to be together, whether you're a just a couple like me and Carl or you have 12 kids like my family did growing up. That's why we continue to add all these new rides and shows for families to experience together. We have something for everyone, but even more important, we have something for you AND your family. Dolly Sings At Foster's Hall of Fame Ceremony The Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday held its annual medallion ceremony recognizing this year's inductees, including Monument Records and Combine Music founder Fred Foster, who gave Dolly, Kris Kristofferson, Roy Orbison and Willie Nelson their first big breaks in music, signing Dolly to his label and publishing house in 1965 until she left for RCA in 1968. Oct. 8: 'Once Upon A Christmas' Vinyl Release Date Updated Boutique reissue company Friday Music has announced the new release date and details for the vinyl reissue of Once Upon A Christmas with Kenny Rogers. As with all of RCA's post-1988 U.S. reissues of the album (they lost the rights to Kenny's solo recordings when he left the label that year), the album will be the nine-track version featuring the six original duets, Dolly's two original solo tracks plus her 1982 recording of "Hard Candy Christmas" which did not appear on the original. The limited-edition pressing will be released on 180 gram audiophile white colored vinyl and feature a gatefold cover. It has been remastered by Joe Reagoso and manufactured at RTI. The album comes out Dec. 2, a delay from its originally-planned Sept. 30 release. Pre-order it here!

U.S. Sales Updates In the U.S., sales numbers showed "Forever Country" sold another 61,000 copies for its No. 1 country singles position, giving it cumulative sales of 155,000 units since release, while "Jolene" by Dolly with Pentatonix sold 6,000 copies for the week in its No. 27 position, giving it a cumulative total of 24,000 units sold since release. And TV station WUSA talked with members of the band about working with Dolly here. Dolly's Pure & Simple sold about 5,700 copies for a cumulative total of about 58,200 units since release and The Complete Trio Collection Deluxe sold about 1,500 copies for a cumulative total of about 7,100 units since release. Preliminary estimates for seventh week sales of Dolly's Pure & Simple in the U.S. show an increase to about 7,100 copies for the week thanks to her television appearances this week, which should push its total to more than 65,000 units since release. The numbers should move it up to around No. 30 overall sales and around No. 5 country when the charts come out on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the success of "Forever Country" prompted Billboard to again pose the question whether the No. 1 status further proves that "I Will Always Love You," which comprises a third of the song, is "the most enduring hit of the rock era." Oct. 5: Dolly To Receive CMA Lifetime Achievement Honor Dolly will on Nov. 2 receive the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Country Music Association at the 50th anniversary CMA Awards show on ABC, it was announced Monday night during Dolly's appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Dolly now becomes the only artist to be honored by the CMA in all six decades of the awards (Vocal Group of the Year 1968, Vocal Duo of the Year 1970 and 1971, Female Vocalist 1975 and 1976, Entertainer of the Year 1978, Vocal Event of the Year 1988 and 1996, Musical Event of the Year 2006, Lifetime Achievement Award 2016), having previously been the only artist to receive a CMA Award in each of the first five decades of the ceremonies. This marks her 12th CMA Award (this honor, her nine regular awards, and two special awards – 1993's Country Music Honors and 2004's International Artist Achievement Award). In a press release on Tuesday, it was noted that the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award is for an iconic artist who has attained the highest degree of recognition in country music established to recognize an artist who has achieved both national and international prominence and stature through concert performances, humanitarian efforts, philanthropy, record sales, and public representation at the highest level having positively impacted and contributed to the growth of the genre throughout a course of years that have proven to have an unprecedented historical impact on fans and industry alike.CMA CEO Sarah Trahern said in the release: "Dolly epitomizes the very definition of the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. She is a trailblazer who continues to enchant and captivate fans around the world, from her latest No. 1 album, to her sold-out tour, and numerous television projects. She is a treasure and deserving of this industry acclaim for her undeniable contributions to the success of Country Music, today." The award was first presented to Nelson in 2012 and then to Kenny Rogers in 2013 and Johnny Cash last year. It was not awarded in 2014.

Oct. 3: Dolly, Trio Still High On U.K., Aussie Charts With about 2,100 copies sold in its sixth week (for a cumulative total of about 39,000 since release), Dolly's Pure & Simple holds steady at No. 2 country in its sixth week on the British charts, it was revealed Friday. The album loses nine places to No. 36 British pop albums, eight to No. 26 overall sales, 10 to No. 25 physical CD sales, and six to No. 19 Scottish albums. Also in the U.K., The Very Best Of Dolly Parton, Volume 1 and The Real Dolly Parton fall back off the top 100 physical CD sales list, down from No. 92 and No. 86, respectively. The Complete Trio Collection Deluxe remains at No. 1 country compilation albums for a third consecutive week, but the vinyl collection of bonus tracks, Farther Along, falls out of that chart's top 20, down from No. 9 in its second week. Also on the country compilation albums chart, Emmylou Harris' Original Album Series: Volume 1 (with two Dolly covers, one track with Dolly harmony and one track with Trio harmony by Dolly and Linda Ronstadt) gains four to No. 16, Dolly's The Tour Collection falls back out of the top 20, down from No. 19, and Ronstadt's Original Album Series (featuring one Dolly cover and one track with Dolly harmony) inches down one to No. 19. Down Under, My Dear Companion: Selections From The Trio Collection by Dolly, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt earns a third consecutive week at No. 1 on the Australian country albums chart, it was announced Sunday, with the collection dropping three spots to No. 7 pop albums and off the digital albums list, down from No. 35, while Dolly's Pure & Simple holds steady at No. 5 country in its sixth chart week and dips four to No. 30 pop. "Forever Country," the 30-artist mash-up of "I Will Always Love You," "On The Road Again" and "Take Me Home Country Roads" including Dolly as the finale, rises 17 in its second week to No. 26 pop singles, while "Jolene" by Dolly and Pentatonix falls out of the top 100 pop singles, down from No. 92. Stateside, the Hits Daily Double final sales estimates of the week put Dolly's album at just under 5,800 copies for its sixth week of U.S. sales, which would put it at about 58,000 copies since release here and let it be around No. 31 for overall album sales next week and around No. 7 country, or about steady with where it was for its fifth week. The American charts will be released on Tuesday.
Third Leg Of Tour Comes To A Close Dolly wrapped up the third leg of her Pure & Simple Tour Sunday night with her second consecutive night at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The tour now goes on break until its fourth and final leg kicks off in her home county on Nov. 15. Wednesday's show in Vina Robles, Calif., was reviewed by The Paso Robles Daily Newshere, while her first night in LA was praised by both The Los Angeles Timeshere and The Orange County Registerhere. The Hollywood show also generated coverage from E! Online about celebrities in the audience here and from several media outlets, including Out In Perthhere, which noted Australian star Kylie Minogue met her backstage with her fiancé, British actor Joshua Sasse, who wore a t-shirt he designed for a new campaign to promote legalization of same-gender marriage in Australia. The Daily Mailhere in the UK and a few other media outlets noted Katy Perry partied at the show with Dolly backstage and posted about it on social media. Other interviews published in recent days include a kiki with RuPaul in Dazedhere and a Q&A with Dolly biographer Alanna Nash in Southern Livinghere.
